Referrers & Healthcare Professionals
Together, we can help clients remain independent, confident and connected — knowing help is always one button press away.
Reassurance for your patients. Supporting safer, more independent living.
APERS provides professionally monitored personal medical alarms for people living at home or in the community. When a client presses their personal alarm, they are connected to our Australian 24/7 monitoring team, who follow a pre-agreed response plan to get help quickly, including emergency services if required.
Our systems are ideal for clients who are at risk of falls, live alone, have complex health conditions or are returning home from hospital. Including an APERS personal alarm in their care plans helps clients stay safely at home, and provide fast assistance no matter the emergency, plus contact nominated family members.
We work with GPs, allied health professionals, hospital discharge teams, aged care providers, support coordinators, and other medical professionals across Australia.
At APERS we genuinely care about the health and wellbeing of those we serve. This is at the heart of everything we do. All systems, processes, procedures, technologies, care team staff and every other aspect of APERS has been assembled, refined and optimised to ensure we provide the fastest emergency response times & support possible 100% of the time. We are independantly audited and certified to meet AS2201.2:2022 – Alarm and Electronic Security Systems, Part 2: Monitoring Centres – we operate at the highest professional standards.
Personal alarms that complement your care
APERS personal alarm solutions include:
- Home Companion in-home medical alarms for clients who mostly stay at home
- Home Companion with falls detection for clients at higher risk of falls
- Freedom Friend mobile alarms and watches for clients who spend time outside of their home – eg. those who go for walks, shop, travel independently, etc.
When a client activates their personal alarm, our 24/7 monitoring team:
- Answers the call and speaks to the client where possible
- Assesses what is happening
- Follows the agreed response plan, which can include contacting family, carers or emergency services
This approach is designed to sit alongside your clinical care, home modifications, exercise programs and medication management.
Assistive technology and the aged care framework
Within Australia’s aged care system, personal emergency alarm systems (medical alarms) are listed in the Support at Home program’s Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme as prescribed assistive technology.
This means they are funded as assistive technology items when included in an older person’s support plan, and must be clinically justified and prescribed by a suitably qualified health professional, with eligibility and funding decisions made under the relevant government program rules.
At APERS, we can provide product information and quotes to support your assessment, while you retain responsibility for clinical decision making and consent.
When to consider an APERS personal alarm
You might consider prescribing a personal alarm for clients who:
- Have a history of falls or near misses
- Live alone or spend long periods without close support
- Are frail after a hospital admission
- Have chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s or epilepsy
- Experience balance or mobility issues and use mobility aids
- Have mild cognitive impairment and are at risk of becoming confused or disoriented
If you are unsure which APERS device is most suitable, our team can talk through the options with you or your care coordinator.
Simple referral pathways
With the client’s consent, there are two straightforward ways to connect them with us at APERS.
Use our Contact Us page:
Please fill out and submit our website contact us page enquiry form with your details, your role and a brief note about the client’s situation. Our team will then contact you first to discuss what the client needs, talk through suitable products and agree on the best next steps.
Client-initiated contact:
Hand the client or their family an APERS brochure and ask them to contact us using the phone, email or website details provided. When they get in touch, we will ask how they heard about us so we can link the enquiry back to your practice or service.
More information about our brochures and resources for your waiting room is below:
Brochures and education for referrers
We can supply our product brochures for your waiting room or for you to hand directly to patients and families.
Clear, client-friendly brochures help people understand what a personal alarm is, how it works when they press the button, who is contacted, and how the service fits alongside their existing care and supports.
Having this information in writing makes it easier for patients to discuss options with family and to think about safety at home.
24/7 Australian monitoring and tailored response plans
Our monitoring centre operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When a client presses their personal alarm:
- The alarm connects to our Australian monitoring team
- We speak to the client through the base unit or mobile device where possible
- If we cannot hear them clearly, we follow their pre-arranged emergency instructions
- If there is concern for their safety and no one can be reached, we escalate the response, which may include contacting emergency services
Response plans are tailored to each client and can include family members, carers or service providers, so the right people are notified at the right time.

Monitored systems, not self-monitored: Please read more about this very important topic below:
Please note:
Please be aware: Unlike many products on the market, our systems and devices are professionally monitored, not self-monitored. Self-monitoring systems rely on calling or texting preset phone numbers, which can be unreliable if the recipient’s phones are switched off, or on silent, or in night mode, or the phone battery is flat, etc. In an emergency, this could mean help is delayed or not provided at all.
If a self-monitored device dials 000, the caller must still be able to speak, explain what has happened, and provide their location. Without this information, emergency services may not be able to send help. In a real emergency, this can be difficult or even impossible, especially if the person is injured, confused, or unable to speak. That’s why our products connect directly to our 24/7 Monitoring Care Team, who can quickly assess the situation and contact emergency services on the client’s behalf, providing them with the details they need right away. Even if the client is unable to respond, our Care Team will ensure help is on the way.
24/7 Help
With one button press you can call for help anytime you need it. Our highly trained Care Team will answer, talk and listen, then take action to make sure you get assistance as quickly as possible. Our Care Team has first-aid training and are available 24 hours a day, so you are never left waiting or unheard.

FAQ's
Below are some frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions, please contact us. Our friendly team are here to assist.
Who is APERS and what do you provide for my patients?
APERS has been providing professionally monitored personal emergency response systems and medical alarms for people living at home or in the community for over 30 years. Our personal alarms, SOS pendants and falls detection devices connect patients to our Australian monitoring centre 24 hours a day, supporting safer, more independent living.
Are APERS personal alarms a type of assistive technology?
Yes. Personal alarms and falls detection devices are widely recognised as assistive technology that supports safety, independence and communication. They sit alongside other equipment such as mobility aids, monitoring devices and communication tools.
Do APERS medical alarms need to be prescribed by a health professional?
In many aged care and disability funding programs, assistive technology must be clinically justified and prescribed as part of a formal care plan. The exact requirements vary between programs, but usually involve an assessment by a GP, nurse, allied health professional or assessor.
For privately purchased devices, no prescription or formal assessment is needed.
Which clients are suitable for an APERS personal alarm?
Typical referrals include clients who have a history of falls, live alone, are frail, have chronic illnesses, use mobility aids or experience periods without close supervision. Clients who want to remain living at home and whose families are worried about “what happens if something goes wrong” also benefit.
What happens after I submit a referral?
Our team will contact the client or their representative, confirm their details, recommend a suitable in-home or mobile device, arrange delivery upon purchase and set up a personalised response plan. Plus testing and ensuring the client knows how to use the device. There are also other steps in the process. The process is logical and straightforward. Our support team is first-rate quality. We are always available to provide support upon request.
How quickly can a personal alarm be set up?
Timeframes depend on the device type and location. Many clients can receive and set up a personal alarm within a short timeframe. If the client is at particularly high risk, please tell us so we can prioritise contact.
Can personal alarms help reduce hospital admissions from falls?
Personal alarms cannot prevent a fall, but they can reduce the time a person spends on the floor, which may lower the risk of complications such as dehydration or pressure injuries. They form one part of a broader falls prevention and management strategy.
What happens if my client presses the alarm but cannot speak?
If we receive an alarm activation and cannot clearly hear the client, our monitoring team follows their pre-arranged emergency instructions. This can include trying phone contacts, calling nominated carers and, where there is concern for safety, escalating to emergency services.
Can you supply brochures and resources for our waiting room?
Absolutely. We can provide brochures for GP clinics, allied health practices, hospitals, community organisations and aged care providers. Contact us to request a tailored pack for your service.
