Margaret and her APERS Home Companion Base Unit

In 2021 we first assisted a lady named Margaret. She lives in Newcastle. Her husband had passed away several years earlier.

The Background

Margaret was 82 years of age when she first contacted us. She had a heart condition. Her daughter lives 20 minutes away.

Her and her daughter needed a reliable emergency personal alert system that Margaret could easily use if she was ever in an emergency situation and needed help.

Our Solution

After consulting with Margaret and her daughter, and making sure we had a very clear understanding of their needs, we supplied Margaret with our APERS Home Companion emergency personal alarm system.

How it was set up:

  • Margaret wanted her Home Companion Base Unit to live on her side-table near her lounge chair. We knew the microphone would pick up her voice from the lounge room and kitchen, so this location was fine.
  • She began wearing the comfortable Pearl Wriststrap device. She commented about how light it was to wear. The help button on it was paired to the base unit.
  • Margaret also has a keysafe – it is located outside her front door in a hidden location.
  • Within our system, the Ambulance is listed as her primary contact, as is her daughter’s mobile phone number. Her keysafe code is also securely listed with us.

When we first installed the system for Margaret, we did our usual testing to ensure everything was working correctly. This included a test call from her wearable device and the base unit. As always, the system worked perfectly.

We also made sure Margaret was comfortable with how it all worked.

What would actually happen in an emergency? Margaret could simply press the help button. Our care team would then open a two‑way voice call through the Home Companion Base Unit, and our care team operator would then speak clearly with Margaret, checking symptoms and whether Margaret is alone or not, and if she needs an ambulance. If needed, we would then call an ambulance and give them the keysafe code, and also notify her daughter. We would then keep in contact with Margaret so she stays calm until the ambulance arrives (and she is being attended) and to make sure her situation does not change. If Margaret was away from the base unit or we could not hear her clearly, we would follow her pre‑arranged emergency instructions immediately, which are also stored within our system.

The Outcome: The Ambulance would arrive to the right address and would have entry access, because they have the keysafe code. Family would also be informed so they can meet the ambulance or follow-up with the hospital and doctors. Margaret would receive early treatment and would NOT be left waiting alone. Instead, our friendly care team provider would help Margaret feel comforted.

Why it works: By being able to simple press a button from anywhere in the home, Margaret can easily hear our care team member via the loud hands‑free audio component built into the system. Information Margaret has previously provided us, plus information she shares with us during the call, ensures the best possible outcome.

The Results

Margaret and her daughter have been very happy with her APERS Home Companion. Margaret did have to use the unit at one point, and the assistance she needed was provided quickly. Thankfully Margaret did not need to go to the hospital.
