Now that we’re over halfway through August, it’s no doubt that Winter is definitely here, especially as the temperatures keep dropping and Australians everywhere are turning their heaters on and wearing layers upon layers of clothing.

However, some dangers do arise from this cold weather, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics stating that more than 5,000 Australians die each Winter than any other season.

Do you know elderly people at risk?

Although most people can easily battle the common cold, older and frailer people can encounter these illnesses more frequently and severely. Elderly people are more susceptible to other cold-related conditions, such as pneumonia and blood clots, and according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, are more likely to die from them than other people.

To prevent these illnesses, the World Health Organisation recommends that everyone takes personal protective methods, such as staying warm, regular hand washing, avoiding contact with sick people, and vaccinations. So, remember to stay rugged up and warm this Winter to avoid getting ill this season!
