Which Personal Emergency Response System is Right For Me?

This blog post has been updated on November 5th, 2025.

Maybe you’ve had a fall when nobody was around, or you’re living alone and your family is concerned for your health, and now you’re contemplating getting a Personal Emergency Response System. However, the world of Personal Alarms can be really daunting, especially with the many devices with different features. Understandably, it can be difficult to decide which product is perfect for you. Luckily we’re here to help!

All of our Personal Emergency Alarm/ Alert Response Systems are water resistant, so you don’t have to take your device off when bathing – which is when most falls happen! As well as this, all of our systems have absolutely no phone call costs!

Home Companion

Our Home Companion comes with a Base Unit and a Pendant that can be worn on the wrist or around the neck.

During an emergency, simply just press the help button on the Base Unit, or the gray button on your pendant. This sends an alert straight to the APERS Care Team, who then connect to your Base Unit and are able to speak to you through the built-in speaker and microphone.

An optional addition to our Home Companion is the falls detection pendant. This sophisticated feature may recognise when you have had a major fall. After identifying this, the pendant searches for movement, and if none is detected, sends a signal to our Care Team. Then, based on your situation, the Care Team can contact your designated emergency contact or emergency services, if required.

Our Home Companions are pre-programmed to make the self-installation as easy as possible, just plug the Base Unit into the wall and you’re done. In fact, our oldest installer was 94! Even better, the pendant doesn’t need to be charged!

The Home Companion may be purchased outright or rented. Our Pendants have a range of 300 metres from the Base Unit in open air, so it’s perfect for use in and around the house. However, if you spend most of your time outside of the house, you may be interested in our Freedom Friend, perfect for when you’re on the go!

Freedom Friend

The APERS Freedom Friend uses advanced cellular and GPS technology, enabling you to to move freely away from your home, and anywhere that has mobile phone coverage! The Freedom Friend has different versions of a pendant worn on a lanyard or as an everyday watch.

Similar to the Home Companion, just press and hold the button button on your Freedom Friend to send an alert to our Care Team. One of our specialists will then open a two-way voice channel through your Freedom Friend and assess your situation, and contact any help that is necessary.

The Freedom Friend comes pre-programmed to our monitoring centre, just turn it on, place it on charge and then when fully charged you’re good to go. The Freedom Friend requires daily charging, so when your sitting and watching your favourite TV program or reading a book, pop it on the charger as charging to full battery only takes two hours!
