How Is Technology Impacting Personal Alarms

This blog has been reviewed 11 November 2025.

Technology is at its best when it helps people stay close. For older Australians and people living with health conditions, today’s personal alarms make it simple to reach help quickly and keep independence without putting life on hold.

From landlines to 4G and GPS

Personal alarms used to rely on fixed phone lines. Modern systems now use mobile networks and smarter electronics so you can get help at home or out and about. That means clearer two-way voice, better coverage, and fewer barriers between you and the person who can help.

How APERS personal alarms work

Press the help button and your device connects to the 24/7 APERS Care Team. We speak to you through the system, find out what is happening, and then contact your nominated family or friends, or emergency services if needed. You get the reassurance of a trained operator every hour of every day.

Two ways to stay protected

  • Home Companion personal alarm. An in-home base unit with a pendant or wriststrap for press-to-call help in and around the home. Selected wearables offer fall detection.
  • Freedom Friend SOS pendant. A mobile personal alarm with 4G and GPS so the Care Team can see your approximate location when an alert is raised. Ideal for errands, appointments, and staying active.

Designed for daily life

Wearables are made to be worn every day and are water resistant for activities like showering and hand washing. The base unit includes backup power for outages. If a battery needs attention, the APERS Care Team receives a notification and will guide you on what to do.

Options for families and carers

If you would like updates, you can nominate contacts for the Care Team to call when an alert comes through. That way family and carers stay in the loop and can act quickly if needed.

Why this tech matters?

Faster, simpler connections mean help is closer when it counts. Whether it is a fall, a sudden illness, or you just feel unsafe, a personal alarm puts a trained voice on the other end of the button and lets loved ones know what is happening.
